Our Minnesota PRIDE Institute – the original PRIDE Institute – was opened in 1986 and is located just outside of Minneapolis in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The following are services available to Lesbian / Gay / Bisexual / Transgender (LGBT) individuals at the Minnesota PRIDE Institute:
The Minnesota PRIDE Institute is operated as a free-standing 36 bed facility located in a serene, retreat-like setting in a suburb of Minneapolis. Our five-acre campus offers opportunities to connect with abundant wildlife visiting our nearby creek and marshland. Our wooded property includes a gymnasium, in-door and out-door volleyball, an outdoor community fire-pit and multiple areas to commune with nature.
PRIDE’s In-patient /Residential program offers round-the-clock chemical dependency and behavioral health care dedicated to the care of the LGBT community. We offer a safe, comfortable environment for LGBT clients to address their mental health and chemical dependency needs. Our interdisciplinary treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, chemical dependency counselors, mental health therapists and a variety of support staff.
After an initial period of physical and / or psychiatric stabilization, clients participate in a variety of assessments to determine their treatment needs while in the PRIDE program. Assessments include a nursing assessment (physical needs), a psychosocial assessment (mental health and social support needs), a chemical dependency assessment (recovery needs) and a discharge needs assessment (after-treatment transitional needs). For clients also diagnosed with mental health issues, a psychiatric evaluation is conducted to determine psychiatric and medication management needs. The various assessments are integrated into a Clinical Summary which identifies the client’s current issues and treatment needs. The multidisciplinary team then uses the Clinical Summary to develop a Treatment Plan which will guide the client’s treatment during their stay at PRIDE Institute. The Treatment Plan also makes recommendations for any services that may be needed post-treatment. Clinical staff on the PRIDE team will assist with making referrals and appointments to professionals in the client’s home community for any needs which are not resolved by the time a client transitions out of the PRIDE program.
The Minnesota PRIDE’s In-patient / Residential Program is designed to meet a variety of client needs. At the heart of the PRIDE “treatment” program is an assortment of therapy modalities using cognitive-behavioral theory and techniques accompanied by traditional 12-step support. The IP program involves small-group therapies specifically designed to meet the special needs of LGBT clients experiencing psychiatric or chemical dependency issues (or both). Typical groups focus on depression, anxiety, addictive behavior, shame / self-esteem, relationships, sexuality, social support, and maintenance of healthy behavior patterns. Weekly appointments with a psychiatrist are available when needed.
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) consists of psychiatric and behavioral health care offered as a “step-down” from traditional in-patient care. Most clients will transition after a period of time from their in-patient / residential stay to a PHP program that includes lodging. PHP is an alternative to traditional in-patient treatment for those that have stabilized emotionally and physically and thus require less staff supervision. Although most PHP clients will lodge at PRIDE Institute, some PHP clients who live in the local area will return to their homes each night after daytime programming. The PHP program uses the same philosophy and treatment modalities as the IP program.
PRIDE’s Extended Care Program is a 60-day program designed specifically for Minnesota state-funded LGBT residents who have had previous (unsuccessful) treatment episodes. This residential program focuses on relapse prevention and allows clients the opportunity to live in a sober environment for a longer period in order to obtain increased sober time prior to transitioning back into the community-at-large.
The Intensive Out-Patient Program (IOP) provides less intensive chemical dependency and behavioral health care than IP and PHP and is often used as a step-down from both IP and PHP. Located in the Uptown area of Minneapolis, the Intensive Out-patient Program is offered during the day, in the evenings, or both. PRIDE’s IOP programming requires a minimum of nine (9) therapy hours per week, however clients may step down to less frequent visits as the begin to take back their life and re-integrate back into work and an active social life. The philosophy is based on the same affirmative therapy approach for LGBT community members as our inpatient program. Clients participating in IOP are assumed to be psychiatrically stable and not in need of the services of PRIDE’s psychiatric staff.
PRIDE Institute has entered into collaborative relationships with five (5) Sober Living / Transitional Homes in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metroplex. These homes were developed for the LGBT community and provide longer-term structured living for PRIDE’s clients who have the need for this type of environment. Although not operated by PRIDE Institute, the leaders of these homes work with PRIDE Institute to assure that our clients have safe, sober places to live following their treatment experiences at PRIDE Institute.
PRIDE Institute in Minnesota currently offers two separate Aftercare Groups. Our Chemical Dependency Aftercare program is free-of-charge, meets weekly, and is open to any LGBT person who has been in treatment before (regardless of where they attended treatment). Our Day3 Aftercare Program is designed for any LGBT person who has been in treatment for crystal methamphetamine addiction. The Day3 program is also free-of-charge and meets weekly.
Part of the mission of PRIDE Institute is to educate the mainstream community on the experiences and special needs of the Lesbian / Gay / Bisexual / Transgendered community. In an effort to fulfill this portion of our mission, PRIDE offers a limited number of internship / practicum placements for area students pursuing mental health professions (psychology, social work, chemical dependency, and pastoral). To date, PRIDE Institute in Minnesota has collaborated with eight higher education institutions in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metroplex to provide learning opportunities for students interested in serving the LGBT population.
The PRIDE Institute program in Minnesota accepts a variety of funding sources. Included in this list are most commercial insurances as well as MN Rule 25 funding (Minnesota’s funding for uninsured residents). Arrangements for private pay and/or credit card are handled on an individual basis. It is our goal to make treatment at PRIDE Institute available to as many LGBT clients as we possibly can.
