Start Your Recovery Journey

The decision to seek treatment is a big step,
but you don’t have to do it alone.

There are so many options available for alcohol rehab programs, but for the LGBTQ+ community, finding the right place can be a little more challenging. During such a sensitive time, clients want to be sure that their identities and experiences will be not only tolerated but honored and embraced. Choosing LGBTQ+ substance use disorder treatment can ensure that you or your loved one can be your authentic self while focusing on recovery.

When it comes to alcohol addiction treatment in Minneapolis, Pride Institute has been serving the recovery care needs of the LGBTQ+ community since 1986. Entering an alcohol addiction treatment facility designed to meet your specific needs can help you change your relationship with drinking and reprioritize your health. What Kinds of Treatment Programs Are Available?

Although you may find similar types of counseling and treatment methods in an LGBTQ+ addiction treatment facility as you would in a general addiction treatment facility, there are some key differences.

Identity-Affirming Care

More places than ever welcome people of all identities, but entering recovery can be a delicate time. At all points of the recovery journey, it can be immensely empowering to know that your identity and experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community will be honored and understood.

A Recovery Community That Truly Understands

One of the most important components of the recovery journey is the support network that you build along the way. It can be challenging for people in the LGBTQ+ community to find sober spaces that feel inclusive since many community spaces include places where alcohol is served. Choosing an LGBTQ+ alcohol addiction treatment program allows you to join a community of people who are not only caring and welcoming but also recovery-focused.

What Happens in Addiction Therapy?

Each client comes to recovery with different needs and treatment goals. Choosing the right treatment approach for you or your loved one starts with talking to a substance use counselor about what may be right for you. Some of the types of treatment programs available are:

  • Residential substance use treatment – Clients participate in counseling, group therapy, and other therapeutic activities while residing at the treatment facility. Medical and psychiatric care is available when needed.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program – During this program, clients attend the program daily for several hours each day while residing in a sober residence. While some clients may start out with this type of program, others may use it as a ‘step-down’ program after completing a residential program.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program – Clients participate in similar therapeutic activities as other levels of care but return to their own homes in the evening. This can be a good choice for clients with a stable, recovery-supportive home environment or who do not need the most intensive levels of care. Other clients may transition into this program after completing more intensive programs.

Many facilities also offer co-occurring disorder treatment, so individuals are able to address their mental health while in treatment as well.

What Are Co-Occurring Conditions, and Why Are They Important in Recovery Care?

The term “co-occurring conditions” refers to situations in which clients are experiencing substance use disorder as well as another mental health condition. It is common, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. Treatment facilities that specialize in helping people who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community are specially equipped to identify and treat clients who are experiencing a co-occurring condition.
