How Is LGBTQ+ Substance Use Treatment Different?

Many treatment methods and approaches used in LGBTQ-specific recovery care are similar to those used in general substance use treatment programs. However, the LGBTQ+ community has some specific needs that may not be served as fully in programs that are not designed with the community in mind.

Identity-Affirming Care

Although more places than ever are welcoming to people of all identities, it is important to know that you will be treated with care and respect and that your identity and experience will be affirmed by care providers. Choosing an LGBTQ+ substance use treatment program such as the ones offered by Pride Institute can free you to be yourself while focusing on your recovery journey.

The LGBTQ+ Community and Co-Occurring Conditions

Research has suggested that clients in the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to experience co-occurring conditions. This means that, in addition to substance use disorder, clients may also be living with a co-occurring mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. In order to treat any of these conditions, all of them must be addressed. Programs designed to help LGBTQ+ clients are prepared to identify and assist with these situations.

Treatment Programs for Substance Use Disorder: The Care You Need

There are several types of programs available to address the needs of clients seeking treatment for substance use. In order to know which level of care you or a loved one needs, it is important to discuss your specific situation with a care provider. Some of the types of programs available are:

  • Residential substance use treatment – Clients stay at the treatment facility during this program, participating in individual counseling, group therapy, and other therapeutic activities. Clients may also receive medical or psychiatric care.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program – During this program, clients attend the program every day for several hours. However, they stay in a residence that affords a less intensive level of care than a residential program. Clients participate in similar activities and counseling as the residential program and continue to receive care.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program – Clients who attend an intensive outpatient program receive similar services to the other levels of care but return to their own residences at night. Some clients begin their recovery journey in this type of program, while others use it as a ‘step-down’ level of care.

When you are ready to take that first step toward recovery, Pride Institute is here to help.
