How Is LGBTQ+ Fentanyl Addiction Treatment Different?

Members of the LGBTQ+ community struggling with fentanyl addiction often face unique and nuanced challenges when it comes to recovery. These needs may be better addressed in a specialized treatment program that was designed with the community’s best interests and care in mind. Pride Institute offers identity-confirming care for the LGBTQ+ community.

The Importance of Identity-Affirming Care

Recovery is an emotionally vulnerable and delicate time; it is very important that your identity is taken into consideration and supported fully. Identity-affirming care ensures that you or your loved one can focus on recovery and healing while being your authentic self.

Treating Co-Occurring Conditions

Co-occurring conditions are mental health concerns that occur alongside substance use disorder. The presence of co-occurring conditions in the LGBTQ+ community can make it difficult to meet recovery goals if underlying mental health issues are not also addressed in treatment. It is crucial to choose a program that addresses both the addiction and the underlying mental health issues that help fuel it so that true healing can begin.

Levels of Care: What Kinds of Treatment Programs Are Available?

Even though there is no one way to treat substance use disorder, and people must all work toward recovery at their own pace, there are still a few standard treatment options that provide varying levels of care.

  • Intensive outpatient program – Intensive outpatient programs provide individuals with the opportunity to make a long-term commitment to recovery. Through intensive programming, participants can access the tools and resources necessary for sustained success. The components of an intensive outpatient program may include individual therapy, group counseling, family sessions, medication management, and support groups. These services are designed to foster progress and help participants to develop the skills needed for a successful recovery. The program also focuses on relapse prevention, helping individuals prepare for potential challenges that may arise during their journey.
  • Partial hospitalization program – Partial hospitalization programs offer an intensive level of addiction treatment that falls between residential and outpatient care. This type of program is designed for individuals who have completed a higher level of care, such as inpatient or residential treatment, but still need more help than what traditional outpatient services can provide. PHPs are usually conducted within a clinical setting during the day. Clients typically attend several hours of programming, such as individual therapy, group therapy, experiential therapies, wellness activities, and 12-step meetings. They are then able to return home in the evening, where they can practice skills learned in treatment with family and friends.
  • Residential treatment – Residential addiction treatment is a highly-structured form of care in which individuals with substance use disorder stay at a residential facility full-time. This type of treatment often lasts for 30 to 90 days and provides intensive, 24/7 care that can help individuals overcome their addictions and learn how to live healthier lives. In addition to providing therapeutic treatment, residential programs may also equip clients with practical life skills for managing their addiction and avoiding relapse. Residential treatment typically includes a combination of group therapy, individual counseling, and educational sessions. During group therapy, individuals learn to work together towards common goals and build strong support networks that can last well after the program ends.

You are likely to get more out of your treatment experience if your needs are met, and your individual identity is recognized. Treatment programs that will understand, support, and validate are invaluable to the LGBTQ+ community.
